Greetings from the Counseling department at FPS! The goal of the Furtah Prep Counseling Department is to help students reach their full potential academically, explore themselves emotionally, build connections socially, and develop a positive identity.

Look for a newsletter to parents and students four to seven times a year with information about upcoming events, college and scholarship information, ACT testing dates, career information, parenting tips, and information on other topics.

ACT 2017

Counselor’s Corner


FPS is pleased to announce we have partnered with ACT State Testing. The ACT® is the leading US college admissions test, measuring what students learn in high school to determine their academic readiness for college.

Test Date:  February 28, 2017

Cost: $65.00

Who should take the ACT

11th and 12th Grade Students


  • Students will take the ACT  at FPS during the school day
  • Students do not need to register online
  • Students should contact your school appointed testing coordinator (Coach K) if they are interested in taking the test
  • The final date to register with your school appointed testing coordinator is January 23, 2017
  • All checks should be made out to the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) and turned into Christy Houchins the Finance Manager.


Students needing accommodations for the ACT will be allowed to test on February 28 - March 14. These dates are firm and no exceptions will be made. Accommodation request must be turned in by January 15th.

ACT offers additional ways for you to prepare for test day, including:

  • ACT® Kaplan® Online Prep Live — An interactive virtual classroom experience that delivers engaging online live instruction on ACT test subjects.
  • ACT Online Prep—The only online program designed exclusively by ACT test development professionals, featuring real questions from previous tests.
  • The Official ACT Prep Guide—An ACT-authorized prep book, with three practice tests, each with an optional writing test, plus access to hundreds of additional questions online.
  • Sample Test Questions—Practice questions to give you a taste of what to expect on the ACT test.

Counselor’s Corner 

Female students interested in Science Majors

Female students interested in STEM majors are invited to attend SCIENTISTA on Monday, February 20, 2017! 

SCIENTISTA is an all women event open to 100 young women in high school. The event consists of meeting with women who have established themselves in the STEM career field. 

Students will learn everything from admission requirements, financial aid, advising, campus life, housing, and much more! During the day, students will have the opportunity to meet current KSU faculty, staff, and students! Below are the details of the event: 

When: Monday, February 20, 2017

Time: 8:30am to 3:15pm 

Where: Kennesaw State University - Marietta Campus

Attendees: High School Females (grades 9th - 12th) 

Tentative Schedule: 

8:30am - Check-in 

9:00am - Welcome/Kickoff

10:00am - Careers in STEM 

10:30am - Campus Tour 

11:00am - Lunch at Stingers 

11:45am - Organization Fair

12:20pm - 2:30pm - STEM Breakout Sessions 

3:00pm - Group Picture 

3:15pm - Wrap up and last Q&A


Check-in opens at 8:30 a.m. in the Marietta Campus Joe Mack Wilson Student Center 2nd floor with the program beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please dress accordingly for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes, as you will be walking around our beautiful campus! If you need special assistance, please give us a call as soon as possible at 470-578-6500.  

Campus events are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. You will be notified via email and/or phone should a cancellation occur. Special weather statements can also be viewed through the Kennesaw State University website. Should the University be closed, all campus tours and events will be canceled.

PRE-ACT at FPS 2017

Counselor’s Corner


 The new PreACT™ helps students practice for the ACT® test experience and empowers them with valuable data and insights.

The first step toward practicing for the ACT® test.

The PreACT provides students with a realistic ACT test experience.

Test Date: January 25th

Cost: $17th

Grades: Intended for students in 10th Grade, but can be taken by students 9th grade and up, as well as advanced 8th graders.

Register by: January 13th as space is limited. Please email your counselor to reserve your spot!

PreACT provides:

   Early indication of progress and ideas for improvement—PreACT gives students an estimated ACT test score and can be used as an indicator of college and career readiness. Reports include data to help teachers and counselors target interventions, inform classroom instruction, and guide students in course selection.


·  Fast, robust reporting—Reports are ready quickly, so teachers and students can get to work turning PreACT insights into action. Reports include information about student interests that counselors can use to advise students in thinking about college majors and careers.


·  Easy, flexible, and affordable administration—PreACT encompasses paper-based, multiple-choice tests in English, math, reading, and science.


The choices a student makes in high school help chart a course for life after it. Educators can use insights from PreACT report data to help students prepare for success— and start making informed choices well before graduation.
